Mater Dei’s No. 99 faces his old school tonight. The 2028 defensive tackle is building a recruiting résumé one gap at a time.

Orange Lutheran’s offensive line spent last fall practicing next to Judah Silva. Tonight they have to block him.

Silva wore No. 90 for the Lancers as a sophomore. Now he wears No. 99 in the middle of Mater Dei’s defensive front. When Orange Lutheran visits Santa Ana for a 7 p.m. Trinity League kickoff, the Class of 2028 defensive tackle will line up across from linemen who know his hands, his habits and his first step better than anyone in the league.

That’s a reunion. For a junior trying to break into the national recruiting conversation, it’s also a showcase.

The Build

The measurables tell the story of a body still under construction. As a sophomore, Orange Lutheran listed Silva at 6-1, 270 on its roster, and MaxPreps had him at 265. A year later, MaxPreps lists him at 6-2, 280 and Rivals at 6-2, 285.

That’s real growth in 12 months. He added mass and kept the movement that got him on a Trinity League varsity field as a sophomore.

Rivals national analyst Brandon Huffman offered an honest counterpoint. He wrote that Silva plays closer to 6-0 and around 270 when matched against interior linemen with verified size. Some people will read that as a knock. I read it as the scariest part of the report.

A shorter interior defender with a frame that can still add weight, and who already wins with strength, has leverage built in. Guards hate playing against low centers of gravity. Silva’s job over the next 18 months is to make that geometry work for him on every snap.

What the Evaluation Says

Rivals gave Silva an overall grade of 75 in an Aug. 31 report. His top graded traits:

  • Strength: 7.8

  • Disengage: 7.8

  • Physicality and effort: 7.8

  • Point of attack: 7.7

His lowest marks were closing speed (7.2) and get-off (7.3).

Put those numbers together and the profile is clear. Silva is a run-game anchor who sheds blocks with technique, stays in his gap and reads plays quickly. He is not yet the type who wins with a first-step explosion off the ball.

The report’s development list is specific:

  • Quickness at the line of scrimmage, starting with his first step

  • More speed chasing plays from the backside

  • Consistency in pad level, because he sometimes plays too high

Pad level is the one to watch tonight. Huffman noted that Silva gets it right more often than not. Against an Orange Lutheran front that knows him, the snaps where he stays low will be the snaps where he wins.

The Production

Rivals has Silva at 12 tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss through four games of his junior season. That production came while Mater Dei opened the year with wins over Orem (32-26) and Valor Christian (38-22), with Silva anchoring the interior on the Monarchs’ front.

Interior linemen in this league don’t stack numbers the way edge rushers do. Their best snaps are often the ones where the running back has nowhere to go and someone else makes the tackle. Gap integrity doesn’t show up in a box score. It shows up in film rooms, and it’s the trait Rivals called consistent.

Faith, Family and Purpose

Silva describes himself as a kid raised in Orange County in a home built on faith, hard work and serving others. In his recruiting profile, he calls football “a platform, a purpose.” He also plays club football with Giant Skillz U16 SoCal Giants, so his offseason reps continue after Mater Dei’s season ends.

College coaches recruit the person as much as the player. A defensive tackle who frames the game that way is telling them what kind of teammate shows up at 6 a.m. in February.

The Call

Rivals’ 75 grade projects Silva as a Group of 5 prospect. He has no publicly reported scholarship offers yet.

Here’s my position, plainly: Judah Silva will hold a Power Four offer before the end of the spring 2027 evaluation period.

Three things get him there:

  • A cleaner get-off. His first step is his lowest-graded skill, and it’s the most coachable thing on the list.

  • Verified measurements. Laser-timed and tape-measured numbers end the debate between 6-0 and 6-2.

  • Strong film against elite opponents. That starts tonight against his old team and continues Oct. 30, when No. 1 St. John Bosco comes to Mater Dei.

Two Trinity League games in eight days, with his whole recruiting story on the line. Watch the middle.
